Description
Cataloged as Judd-128b (Pollock-152, R.8), this is an exceptionally rare variant of the 1851 ring cent series, struck in silver with a reeded edge on a solid, unperforated planchet. The obverse displays CENT above and ONE TENTH SILVER below a solid center where a perforation would normally appear. The reverse carries the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA surrounding a laurel wreath. The unperforated planchet distinguishes this piece from the more common annular versions of Judd-127 through Judd-129. Most ring cent patterns were struck with a central hole, which served the dual purpose of enlarging the coin's diameter while reducing metal content and preventing confusion with the dime. Examples without the perforation are significantly rarer, indicating they was produced in smaller quantities, as presentation pieces or afterthoughts. USPatterns.com confirms only two known specimens, making J-128b one of the scarcest entries in the entire ring cent series.
