1851 Proof Cent Pattern - J-128a, Restrike
Strike TypeCoin Details
Description
Judd-128a is a composition variant of the 1851 unperforated ring cent restrike, combining the standard J-128 dies with an alternative metallic composition indicated by the "a" suffix. The obverse and reverse designs are identical to J-128: "CENT" and "1851" with rosettes on the obverse, "USA" and "ONE TENTH SILVER" on the reverse, without a center perforation. This restrike was produced as part of the extensive program initiated under Mint Director Snowden, who authorized the production of pattern restrikes both to satisfy growing collector demand and to use as trade material for acquiring rare coins for the Mint Cabinet collection. The variant composition of J-128a represents the Mint's continued interest in testing different alloys even during the restrike period, as the small cent question remained unresolved until the introduction of the Flying Eagle cent. Restrikes in variant compositions are typically rarer than those in the standard billon alloy.
Rarity Notes
R.7. Very rare; fewer examples than the standard billon restrike.
