Description
The 1850 (O) Liberty Head Quarter Eagle is a Gold Quarter Eagle produced at the New Orleans Mint as part of the Liberty Head Quarter Eagles 1840-1907 series. With a mintage of 84,000, this is a less common issue — ranked 3rd of 4 mint variants by mintage, with 23% of production. The obverse features Liberty facing left wearing a coronet inscribed LIBERTY and the reverse displays a heraldic eagle with shield on breast, olive branch and arrows in talons, with a banner reading E PLURIBUS UNUM. Peak Gold Rush era. Charlotte, Dahlonega, and New Orleans branch mint issues are collected as specialties. Struck at the New Orleans Mint, which operated from 1838 to 1909 and produced coins prized for their historical Southern provenance.
