1849 Proof Double Eagle Pattern - J-118
Strike TypeCoin Details
Description
Judd-118 is the second die variety of the 1849 double eagle pattern, representing one of Longacre's alternative obverse designs created during the contentious development of America's largest gold denomination. Like J-117, the reverse features the heraldic eagle design that would be adopted for the Liberty Head double eagle series produced from 1850 through 1907. The obverse varies slightly in the arrangement of Liberty's hair and the positioning of design elements from the J-117 variety. The 1849 double eagle patterns are among the most celebrated coins in all of numismatics, struck during the pivotal year when the California Gold Rush transformed American coinage. Chief Engraver Longacre was compelled to create multiple obverse designs due to interference from Mint officials who opposed his appointment. The existence of multiple die varieties (J-117 and J-118) documents this difficult creative process. Like its companion, J-118 is of extraordinary rarity, with its current location undocumented.
