Description
The Judd-11 is the plain-edge copper variety of the 1792 Disme, one of the earliest pattern coins produced at the fledgling United States Mint. On July 9, 1792, Mint Director David Rittenhouse requested permission from President George Washington to coin half cents, cents, half dismes, and dismes; Washington approved the same day. The obverse features Liberty with flowing hair facing left, with "LIBERTY PARENT OF SCIENCE & INDUST." around the border and the date 1792 below. The reverse depicts an eagle in flight with outstretched wings, "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" surrounding, and "DISME" below. While the more commonly encountered J-10 variety has a reeded edge, the J-11 is distinguished by its completely plain edge. Of the approximately two dozen 1792 dismes known today (three in silver, eighteen in copper with reeded edge, and three in copper with plain edge), the J-11 plain edge variety is among the rarest.
