Description
The 1848 (D) Liberty Head Half Eagle - D/D represents a Dahlonega Mint issue from the Liberty Head Half Eagles 1839-1908 series. The Dahlonega Mint struck 47,465 half eagles dated 1848 in all; how many show the D/D is not recorded. The obverse features Liberty facing left wearing a coronet inscribed LIBERTY and the reverse displays a heraldic eagle with shield on breast, olive branch and arrows in talons. California Gold Rush bullion began arriving at Philadelphia. The Dahlonega Mint in Georgia struck gold coins from 1838 until its closure at the start of the Civil War in 1861. Struck in 90% gold, 10% copper, weighing 8.36 grams, 21.65 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #8239.
