Description

The 1846 (D) Liberty Head Quarter Eagle - D/D is a Gold Quarter Eagle produced at the Dahlonega Mint as part of the Liberty Head Quarter Eagles 1840-1907 series. The obverse features Liberty facing left wearing a coronet inscribed LIBERTY and the reverse displays a heraldic eagle with shield on breast, olive branch and arrows in talons, with a banner reading E PLURIBUS UNUM. Quarter eagles struck during the Mexican-American War era, with production at four mints. Struck at the Denver Mint, established in 1906 from an earlier assay office that processed Colorado gold rush metal. Auction record: $26,400 AU58 08-31-2022 Stack's Bowers. Struck in 90% gold, 10% copper, weighing 4.18 grams, 18 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #97742.
