Description
The 1846 (D) Liberty Head Quarter Eagle is a Gold Quarter Eagle produced at the Dahlonega Mint as part of the Liberty Head Quarter Eagles 1840-1907 series. With a mintage of 19,303, this is a scarce issue — ranked 2nd of 4 mint variants by mintage, with 18% of production. The obverse features Liberty facing left wearing a coronet inscribed LIBERTY and the reverse displays a heraldic eagle with shield on breast, olive branch and arrows in talons, with a banner reading E PLURIBUS UNUM. Quarter eagles struck during the Mexican-American War era, with production at four mints. Struck at the Denver Mint, established in 1906 from an earlier assay office that processed Colorado gold rush metal. Estimated market value ranges from $3.4K to $43K depending on grade and condition. Struck in 90% gold, 10% copper, weighing 4.18 grams, 18 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #7742.
