Description

This silver restrike of the William Washington at Cowpens medal (Betts-594) was produced at the Paris Mint during the 1845-60 restrike period. The silver composition elevates this restrike above the bronze versions in both material value and collectibility. The original Betts-594 medal, part of the Comitia Americana series, was engraved by Augustin Dupre and authorized by Congress to honor William Washington's cavalry heroics at Cowpens. Unlike his famous cousin George, William Washington was a hands-on combat officer who personally led charges and suffered multiple battle wounds. His actions at Cowpens were considered among the finest cavalry tactics of the entire Revolution. Silver restrikes from this Paris Mint period are significantly scarcer than their bronze counterparts, as fewer were produced and the precious metal content made them more desirable for retention.
