Description

Betts-546 in bronze features the "American Beaver" motif associated with Benjamin Franklin, combining two of the most recognizable symbols of colonial America. The beaver was central to the North American fur trade that drove much of early colonial exploration and settlement, while Franklin was the most famous American in the world by 1776. The medal's design incorporates the beaver as a symbol of American industry and resourcefulness, qualities that Franklin himself embodied. The 1776 date makes this one of the most historically significant medals in the Betts catalog, produced in the year of American independence. Franklin's image appeared on numerous medals during this period, as European admirers -- particularly the French -- celebrated the philosopher-diplomat who represented the new American republic. Bronze strikings were produced for broad distribution, making this iconic design accessible to Franklin's many admirers.
