Description

Betts-568 in bronze from original dies is the celebrated John Paul Jones Comitia Americana medal, one of the most famous and valuable medals in American numismatics. This bronze striking from the original Augustin Dupre dies represents a genuine eighteenth-century product of the Paris Mint, distinguished from the numerous later restrikes by its provenance and edge characteristics. The medal honors Captain Jones for his legendary victory over HMS Serapis on September 23, 1779, when his sinking Bonhomme Richard defeated the superior British warship in one of the most dramatic naval engagements in history. The obverse bears Dupre's masterful portrait of Jones, while the reverse depicts the battle with extraordinary detail. Bronze original-die Jones medals are among the most desirable items in all of American numismatics, combining the finest medallic artistry of the eighteenth century with one of the most celebrated military exploits in American history.
