Coin Details
Description
Betts-546 in silver is the premium version of the Benjamin Franklin American Beaver medal from 1776, the year of American independence. Silver strikings of this design were produced in limited numbers for important recipients and collectors. The American Beaver image combined with Franklin's association creates a medal that symbolizes the industrious, practical character that Europeans attributed to the new American nation. Franklin was enormously popular in France, where he served as American Minister from 1778 to 1785, and French medal makers produced numerous Franklin portraits and allegories. The silver composition elevates this medal to presentation quality, appropriate for diplomatic gifts or the cabinets of serious collectors. Silver Franklin medals from 1776 are among the most desirable pieces in the Betts catalog, combining precious metal with the most famous American and the most consequential year in American history.
