Description

Fourth documented cud for the 1838 Modified Matron Head Coronet Head Cent, CU-1C-1838-04 represents yet another die that developed a rim fracture during this date's production — joining at least three other documented cuds including CU-1C-1838-02. Each of these four cuds originated from a separate die, since a rim fracture is specific to an individual die and produces a cud unique in position, size, and shape. The Modified Matron Head design, with its refined portrait and modified hair curls, was approaching the end of its short tenure in 1838. Christian Gobrecht's work on the large cent series would culminate in the Braided Hair design of 1839, making the Modified Matron Head a relatively brief transitional type. A cud occurs when a portion of the die rim fractures completely away, and the resulting cavity fills with metal during each strike to build up a raised, featureless mass. The presence of four documented cuds for a single date suggests the 1838 production run consumed enough die pairs that multiple rim failures are recorded, which aligns with the year's substantial mintage.
