RCD-1C-1835B-300X Retained Cud

Description

Third in a series of retained cuds documented on the 1835 Matron Head Coronet Head Cent with Small 8, Stars die characteristics, this variety formed at approximately the 300-degree position — completing a remarkable trio of rim fractures at 150, 230, and 300 degrees on coins from this die variety. A retained cud occurs when a rim section of the die cracks but the fractured piece does not separate, remaining in place with slight displacement that produces a visible crack line on struck coins. The concentration of three retained cuds on a single die variety suggests either a particularly stressed die or multiple dies from the same hub sharing structural vulnerabilities. The 1835 large cent was among the final issues of the Matron Head design before its modification into the Braided Hair type. Pure copper composition and the 28.5mm diameter placed considerable demands on the dies during striking, and rim areas experienced peak stress as planchet metal flowed outward under pressure.
