Description

This cud on the 1826 Matron Head Coronet Head Cent records die rim failure from the era when Philadelphia was the sole federal coinage facility. The Matron Head design, a variation of the Coronet Head type that served on the large cent from 1816 through 1839, features Liberty wearing a coronet inscribed with LIBERTY, with the denomination expressed as ONE CENT within a wreath on the reverse. A cud forms when a section of the die rim fractures and the broken piece separates entirely, creating a cavity that fills with metal during striking to produce a raised featureless mass at the coin's edge. Large cents of this period were struck on copper planchets roughly the diameter of a modern quarter, and the soft copper combined with the force required to fully strike the design subjected dies to considerable stress.
