Description
The 1820 Capped Bust Dime - STATESOF is a dime minted at the Philadelphia Mint, within the Capped Bust Dimes 1809-1837 series. With a mintage of 942,587, this is a less common issue — ranked 2nd of 4 mint variants by mintage, with 29% of production. The obverse features Liberty facing left wearing a mob cap or turban and the reverse displays a heraldic eagle with shield on breast, olive branch and arrows in talons, with a banner reading E PLURIBUS UNUM. Several die varieties exist. The Capped Bust Dime remained a Philadelphia-only issue throughout the series. Philadelphia's mint — the nation's first — has produced coins without interruption since its founding in 1792. Estimated market value ranges from $222 to $9.3K depending on grade and condition. Struck in 89.2% silver, 10.8% copper, weighing 2.7 grams, 19 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #4494.
