Description
The 1820 Capped Bust Dime - STATESOF is a dime minted at the Philadelphia Mint, within the Capped Bust Dimes 1809-1837 series. Every 1820 dime, STATESOF or not, falls within the 942,587 reported for the year; how many carry the STATESOF reverse is unknown. The obverse features Liberty facing left wearing a mobcap and the reverse displays a heraldic eagle with shield on breast, olive branch and arrows in talons, with a banner reading E PLURIBUS UNUM. Several die varieties exist. The Capped Bust Dime remained a Philadelphia-only issue throughout the series. Struck in 89.2% silver, 10.8% copper, weighing 2.7 grams, 18.8 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #4494.
