About This Coin
The 1820 Capped Bust Dime is a United States dime from the Capped Bust Dimes 1809-1837 series — an early issue, 4th of 20 years in the series. In 1820, coins were struck at the Philadelphia Mint with a combined mintage of 3.2 million. This represents the second-highest annual mintage in the series, above the series median of 1.0 million. The obverse features Liberty facing left wearing a mob cap or turban and the reverse displays a heraldic eagle with shield on breast, olive branch and arrows in talons, with a banner reading E PLURIBUS UNUM. Several die varieties exist. The Capped Bust Dime remained a Philadelphia-only issue throughout the series. Struck in 89.2% silver, 10.8% copper, weighing 2.7 grams, with a reeded edge. Across its variants, estimated values range from $222 to $9.3K depending on mint mark, grade, and strike type. A notable auction result reached $156K in PR66 grade at Heritage Auctions. Designed by John Reich.
