Description
The 1814 Capped Bust Dime - Small Date, struck at the Philadelphia Mint, is part of the Capped Bust Dimes 1809-1837 collection. With a mintage of 421,500, this is a less common issue — the lowest mintage among 3 mint variants, representing only 33% of total production. The obverse features Liberty facing left wearing a mob cap or turban and the reverse displays a heraldic eagle with shield on breast, olive branch and arrows in talons, with a banner reading E PLURIBUS UNUM. The only Capped Bust Dime struck during the War of 1812 era — no dimes were produced from 1811-1813 due to wartime disruptions. The Philadelphia Mint, America's oldest coin-making facility, has struck coins continuously since 1792. Estimated market value ranges from $117 to $5.7K depending on grade and condition. Struck in 89.2% silver, 10.8% copper, weighing 2.7 grams, 19 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #4489.
