Description

This 1808 Classic Head large cent (Sheldon S-277) exhibits two distinct die errors: a pre-cud on the reverse and a die clash on the obverse. Pre-cuds occur when die cracks develop along the rim in patterns that would eventually lead to a cud if the die continued in use. In this case the die crack starts around 9 o'clock and splits into two. The bottom portion stops after running through the wreath, but the top portion extends through the wreath and to the other rim to the right side of "STATES." The obverse die clash shows transferred design elements from the reverse die. The 1808 was the first year of the Classic Head design.
