Description

A cud is visible on this 1804 Draped Bust half cent of the Crosslet 4, Stems variety. A cud occurs when a piece of the die breaks away at the rim, leaving a raised, featureless blob of metal on the struck coin where the broken portion of the die could no longer impart the design. In this case, the cud runs from the middle of the "R" and outside "TY" in "LIBERTY," extending slightly clockwise. The 1804 Draped Bust half cent is known in several varieties distinguished by the style of the "4" in the date and the presence or absence of stems on the wreath.
