1801 Draped Bust Large Cent S-213 Obverse Multiple Pre-Cud Die Cracks

Description

Pre-cuds represent an intermediate stage of die failure where cracks have developed along the rim in patterns that outline where a full cud break would eventually form if the die remained in service, but the metal has not yet separated from the die face. On this 1801 Draped Bust large cent attributed to Sheldon variety S-213, four rim-to-rim die cracks run through the letters ERTY in LIBERTY on the obverse, extending in front of Liberty's face to the rim between approximately the two o'clock and three o'clock positions. These interconnected cracks trace the boundary of a potential cud that never fully detached, preserving the transitional moment between simple die cracking and a retained die break. Some die cracking and die clashing are also visible on the reverse, indicating that this die pair was under significant stress during its final use.
