Description

A split die is visible on the obverse of this 1793 Liberty Cap large cent. A split die occurs when a die crack extends completely across the face of the die from rim to rim, splitting the die into two or more pieces and leaving a raised line spanning the full diameter of the struck coin. In this case, the crack runs from the rim along the outside edge of the "3" in the date, through Liberty, and up through the "E" in "LIBERTY." The 1793 Liberty Cap cent was the second design type used for large cents and was produced in very limited quantities, making die failures on this type particularly notable.
