Description
This is the 1788 Massachusetts cent without a period after the legend. Massachusetts struck cents and half cents in 1787 and 1788 under an act of October 17, 1786, with an Indian holding a bow and arrow on one side and an eagle with a shield on the other. Crosby credits most dies to Joseph Callender and some 1788 dies, with a narrow S in MASSACHUSETTS, to Jacob Perkins; his accounts show the mint spent more than the value of the coins it struck. Crosby's tables of 1788 cent reverses separate dies with a point after the legend from those without one.
