Description
This is the 1788 Massachusetts half cent. Massachusetts struck cents and half cents in 1787 and 1788 under an act of October 17, 1786, with an Indian holding a bow and arrow on one side and an eagle with a shield on the other. Crosby credits most dies to Joseph Callender and some 1788 dies, with a narrow S in MASSACHUSETTS, to Jacob Perkins; his accounts show the mint spent more than the value of the coins it struck. Crosby found the 1788 half cents usually weighing about 76 grains, and both of their reverse dies have the narrow S he linked to Perkins. PCGS number 308.
