Description
The (1785) Bronze Token "USA" Bar Copper is filed under Bar Cent in the Post-1776 Private and Regional Issues (1778-1820) series. The Bar copper has a large USA monogram on one side and thirteen horizontal bars on the other. Crosby quotes Bushnell's account that it was made in Birmingham in 1785, perhaps by Wyon, that the monogram was copied from Continental Army buttons, and that it first appeared in New York in November 1785 but was little liked because of its light weight. Crosby found two pairs of dies and warned of a smaller piece of recent manufacture. PCGS lists it as #599.
