Description
The 1776 1/2 P Massachusetts - Janus Half Penny is filed under Massachusetts Copper Coins (Unofficial) in the Post-1776 Private and Regional Issues (1778-1820) series. Crosby describes two copper patterns dated 1776 for Massachusetts. One has a pine tree with 1d LM and MASSACHUSETTS STATE, and a seated Liberty with LIBERTY AND VIRTUE; he knew it as probably unique. The other, the so-called Janus copper, has three heads joined on one side and a seated GODDESS LIBERTY on the other; its only known example was found with plates engraved by Paul Revere, and Crosby thought both pieces were private ventures because no record of them exists. Crosby notes that the piece has three heads joined rather than the two of a Janus head. PCGS lists it as #291.
