Description

A 1783 Nova Constellatio silver pattern for 1000 units, called a "Mark." This is the largest denomination in Gouverneur Morris's proposed decimal coinage system. The Mark was intended as the primary large silver coin, analogous to the later dollar. Only a handful of these patterns are known, making the Mark one of the most important early American numismatic rarities. The design features the eye of providence surrounded by rays and thirteen stars.
