Description

This 1780 silver medal (Betts-571) relates to the League of Armed Neutrality, a diplomatic alliance formed in 1780 by Russia, Denmark, Sweden, and other European neutral powers to protect their commercial shipping from British naval interference during the American Revolution. The Armed Neutrality was a significant blow to British diplomatic prestige and naval strategy, as it challenged Britain's claim to the right of search and seizure of neutral shipping carrying contraband to the rebellious colonies. Catherine the Great of Russia initiated the league, and its formation demonstrated that Britain's aggressive naval policies had alienated much of Europe. The silver medal documents this important diplomatic development that weakened Britain's ability to enforce its naval blockade of the American colonies.
