Description
The 1776 Massachusetts Half Penny - Pine Tree is filed under Massachusetts Copper Coins (Unofficial) in the Post-1776 Private and Regional Issues (1778-1820) series. Crosby describes two copper patterns dated 1776 for Massachusetts. One has a pine tree with 1d LM and MASSACHUSETTS STATE, and a seated Liberty with LIBERTY AND VIRTUE; he knew it as probably unique. The other, the so-called Janus copper, has three heads joined on one side and a seated GODDESS LIBERTY on the other; its only known example was found with plates engraved by Paul Revere, and Crosby thought both pieces were private ventures because no record of them exists. Crosby records the piece as probably unique, then in the collection of William S. Appleton. PCGS lists it as #289.
