Description
The 1776 Massachusetts Half Penny - Indian is filed under Massachusetts Copper Coins (Unofficial) in the Post-1776 Private and Regional Issues (1778-1820) series. Crosby describes two copper patterns dated 1776 for Massachusetts. One has a pine tree with 1d LM and MASSACHUSETTS STATE, and a seated Liberty with LIBERTY AND VIRTUE; he knew it as probably unique. The other, the so-called Janus copper, has three heads joined on one side and a seated GODDESS LIBERTY on the other; its only known example was found with plates engraved by Paul Revere, and Crosby thought both pieces were private ventures because no record of them exists. PCGS lists it as #290.
