Description
This is a cast example of the 1760 Florida proclamation piece, made by pouring silver into a mould rather than striking it between dies. When Charles III came to the Spanish throne, towns across the empire issued proclamation pieces, and the Florida piece of 1760 names Juan Estevan de Pena. Such pieces were usually cast, which was cheaper than cutting dies, and Stack's Bowers records about five Florida pieces, one of them struck. It is catalogued as Betts-454 and Herrera 56. Stack's Bowers gives the cast piece as 31.4 mm and 8.22 grams, against 31.1 mm and 13.56 grams for the struck one.
