Description
This 1739 bronze medal, cataloged as Adams-Chao PBvi 9-J, pairs obverse die 9 with reverse die J in the Vernon Portrait and Icons series. The ninth obverse die in the PBvi sequence represents a mature phase of medal production when die sinkers had refined their techniques through multiple iterations. The J reverse — high in the alphabetical sequence — pairs with this late-phase obverse to create a variety that reflects the full development of the PBvi design concept. The letter J is used in the Adams-Chao system after skipping I, maintaining clarity in die identification. Struck in copper alloy (AE), this medal was part of the massive commercial production that made Vernon medals among the most common eighteenth-century English medals. Despite their original abundance, attrition over nearly three centuries has reduced surviving populations considerably, and specific die pairings like PBvi 9-J can be difficult to locate in collectible condition.
Rarity Notes
Scarce. Higher-numbered PBvi die pairings are less frequently encountered at auction.
