Description
This 1739 bronze medal, cataloged as Adams-Chao PBvi 26-PP, is the highest-numbered PBvi variety in this collection, pairing obverse die 26 with double-letter reverse PP. The twenty-sixth obverse die represents the absolute pinnacle of die production in the Vernon Portrait and Icons subgroup — an extraordinary testament to the scale and longevity of the Vernon medal craze. Reverse PP is correspondingly deep in the double-letter sequence. This variety was produced at the very end of the PBvi production cycle, when die sinkers had exhausted the standard alphabet and pushed well into double-letter territory for both obverse and reverse designations. Struck in copper alloy (AE), the PBvi 26-PP variety stands as one of the ultimate collecting challenges in the Vernon medal series. Its high die numbers on both sides make it a marker piece for the most advanced Vernon medal collections, representing the final flowering of the most prolific subgroup in eighteenth-century English private medal production.
Rarity Notes
Very rare. One of the highest die pairings in the PBvi subgroup, produced in minimal quantities.
