Description
This 1739 bronze medal, cataloged as Adams-Chao PBvi 20-HH, shares obverse die 20 with the PBvi 20-GG variety but pairs it with a different double-letter reverse die HH. The existence of multiple double-letter reverses paired with obverse 20 demonstrates that late-phase production was not merely a trickle of remainders but a sustained effort to produce new varieties. Reverse die HH would carry imagery distinct from GG, offering collectors another perspective on the Porto Bello narrative. The PBvi 20 obverse die, having been paired with at least two reverses (GG and HH, plus others), was evidently a durable die that remained in good condition through extended use. Struck in copper alloy (AE), this medal is a testament to the remarkable depth of the Vernon medal catalog. The PBvi subgroup alone contains more die varieties than many entire national medal series from the same period.
Rarity Notes
Rare. Double-letter reverse pairing for a high-numbered obverse die indicates very limited production.
