Description

This 1739 bronze medal, cataloged as Adams-Chao PBvi 16-W, shares obverse die 16 with the PBvi 16-V variety but pairs it with reverse die W. The existence of two reverse pairings for obverse 16 indicates this obverse die remained in usable condition long enough to be paired with multiple reverses, or alternatively, that it was considered successful enough to warrant cutting a second reverse die to extend its commercial life. Reverse die W is among the highest-lettered reverses in the PBvi subgroup, confirming its late-production status. Struck in copper alloy (AE), this medal is one of the more commonly encountered high-numbered PBvi varieties, as it was produced in somewhat larger quantities than other late-series pairings. The PBvi 16-W combination provides a useful comparison piece alongside the 16-V variant for studying reverse die differences within the same obverse die group.
