Die Clash Overlays: Where Clash Marks Appear on 385 Designs
Die ClashWe have published 385 die clash overlays, covering 32 series from half cents to gold double eagles. Each one shows where clash marks fall on that design. They are collected in one place: Die Clash Overlays.
What a Die Clash Is
When a planchet fails to feed between the dies, the obverse and reverse dies strike each other directly. Each picks up a faint, reversed impression of the other. Every coin struck afterwards carries those marks, in the same places, because the two dies meet in the same alignment every time.
That last point is what makes an overlay useful. The marks are not random. If you know how the two sides align, you know where to look.
What These Overlays Are Not
They are predictive, not evidence. An overlay shows where clash marks would appear on a design. It is not a record that the coin pictured carries a clash.
That distinction matters more than it might sound. Of the 386 coins these overlays were built against, 14 have a confirmed die clash catalogued beneath them. The rest are there so you know where to look on a coin you are holding — not because we are claiming anything about them.
How to Use One
Find your coin's design in the reference. The overlay shows the obverse and reverse in the alignment the dies meet, so the devices that would transfer are the ones that sit opposite each other. On a Washington quarter that is the point of the bust against the eagle's breast; on a large cent it is the hair against the wreath.
Then check the coin. Clash marks are faint, raised and in a fixed position. If what you are seeing is incuse, or moves around between examples of the same date and mint, it is damage rather than a clash. The Die Clash entry in Learn covers that test in full.
Where the Confirmed Ones Live
Clashes we have verified are catalogued as their own listings, with attribution and die markers. The overlays are a map; the catalogue is the record. If you find one that is not listed, submit it we would love to take a look at it.
