1952 Roosevelt dime "Spiked Head" die crack
Spiked HeadPosted by NumisdexDealer· 0 replies

Found this one in a mixed lot years ago. Even without magnification you can see the main die crack running from the rim across the back of Roosevelt's head. Collectors call this a "spiked head" — when die cracks radiate from the top of the portrait, it creates this horned or spiked look. It's caused by metal fatigue in the die from the repeated striking pressure. The cracks show up as raised lines on the coin because metal gets forced into the fractures during striking. Roosevelt dimes from the late 1940s through the 1960s are a great series for die cracks. Still in my collection — one of those coins that's more about the character than the value.
