About This Coin
Eight-sided gold quarter dollars of Period One in the Breen-Gillio catalogue, dated 1853 to 1856. San Francisco jewelers made these small pieces during the Gold Rush, when small change was short; most weigh less than the gold their face value called for (Locke 2013), but they passed as money. Each page below is one Breen-Gillio number; the makers named in the sources include Frontier, Deviercy & Co. and Antoine Louis Nouizillet.
