Description
Civil War store card from Maryland, cataloged as Fuld 750A-5A. Maryland was a border state with significant Confederate sympathies, particularly in Baltimore, where merchants issued tokens during the small change shortage. This undated token was struck circa 1862-1864 during the wartime coin shortage. Each unique combination of obverse and reverse dies constitutes a separate Fuld catalog number, even when struck in the same metal. Collectors bought Civil War tokens even while they circulated, so numismatic strikes often survive in high grades.
