Description
This undated Civil War era token, cataloged as Fuld 60AK-1b, is a brass patriotic edition piece associated with the Shakespeare Club of Maryland. Unlike most Civil War tokens issued by commercial merchants, this piece was produced for a social or literary organization, indicating the Shakespeare Club used the token either as a membership piece, an event admission token, or simply as a patriotic statement during the war years. Literary and social clubs were common in mid-nineteenth century American cities, and Maryland's clubs operated under the political tensions of a border state. The brass composition and patriotic die combination follow standard Civil War token manufacturing practices, with the token produced by one of the major die-sinker firms in Cincinnati or New York that supplied the majority of Civil War tokens nationwide.
