Description
This undated bronze medal, cataloged as Adams-Chao PBv 26-U, shares reverse die U with the undated PBv 25-U variety but pairs it with a different obverse die 26. The die-sharing of reverse U between obverse dies 25 and 26 creates a collecting pair within the undated PBv varieties. Both medals would display the same reverse imagery but different obverse portraits of Vernon. The PBv 26 portrait represents the twenty-sixth distinct rendering of Vernon in the portrait-only format, demonstrating continuing die production even for the undated subgroup. Struck in copper alloy (AE), this medal documents the undated production stream within the PBv series. The clustering of undated varieties in the mid-twenties obverse die range (25, 26, 27, 29) indicates these were produced by a single workshop or during a specific production phase when date inclusion was not prioritized. This clustering provides valuable evidence for understanding the organization of Vernon medal production.
Rarity Notes
Scarce. Part of a cluster of undated PBv varieties sharing die elements.
