Description
This 1739 bronze medal, cataloged as Adams-Chao PBv 19-N, shares reverse die N with the PBv 17-N variety but pairs it with a different obverse die 19. This die-sharing confirms that reverse N was available to the workshop producing late-phase PBv medals, being paired with at least two different obverse dies (17 and 19). The nineteenth obverse die in the PBv series is among the highest numbered, indicating this portrait die was cut during the later stages of production. The shared reverse creates a collecting connection between the PBv 17-N and 19-N varieties, which would display identically on the reverse but show distinct portraits on the obverse. Struck in copper alloy (AE), the PBv 19-N variety demonstrates the die-sharing patterns that characterize the Vernon medal production network, where commercially successful reverse dies were retained and reused with new obverses to extend their productive life.
Rarity Notes
Scarce to rare. High-numbered PBv obverse dies paired with reused reverses indicate late production.
