Description
This undated bronze medal, cataloged as Adams-Chao PBv 25-U, is one of several PBv varieties lacking a date. The omission of a date was relatively uncommon in the Vernon medal series, where most pieces proudly display 1739 or 1740 to commemorate the Porto Bello victory. The PBv 25 obverse die presents Vernon's portrait without a date in the obverse legend, while reverse die U carries Porto Bello imagery. The absence of a date was deliberate — some die sinkers omitted the date to create "timeless" medals that could be sold beyond the immediate anniversary period, or it reflects a die sinker who chose to allocate the available space to text rather than numerals. Struck in copper alloy (AE), undated Vernon medals form a distinct collecting subcategory, with specialist collectors noting and cataloging the variations in legend content that replace the date information.
Rarity Notes
Scarce. Undated PBv varieties are somewhat less common than their dated counterparts.
