About This Coin
From the great industrial exhibitions of the nineteenth century through the world's fairs of the early twentieth, exposition and world's fair medals constitute one of the broadest and most visually diverse categories in American exonumia. These medals were struck to commemorate, advertise, and serve as souvenirs for events including the 1853 New York Crystal Palace Exhibition, the 1876 Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia, the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago, the 1901 Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo, the 1904 Louisiana Purchase Exposition in St. Louis, and dozens of smaller regional fairs and industrial exhibitions. Metal compositions span the full spectrum from gold presentation pieces awarded to exhibitors through silver, bronze, aluminum, and white metal examples produced for general sale to fairgoers. Designs reflect the architectural grandeur and thematic ambitions of their respective expositions — allegorical figures representing progress, industry, and commerce appear alongside detailed depictions of fair buildings, fountains, and exhibition halls. Many were produced by leading American and European medal manufacturers including Tiffany & Co., the U.S. Mint (under contract), and European firms such as Christofle. A notable auction result reached $4,600 in SP66 grade at Stack's Bowers, with the market showing particular strength for official presentation medals in precious metals and for pieces associated with the most historically significant expositions. The Hibler-Kappen catalog provides the standard numismatic reference for American so-called dollars, but exposition medals extend well beyond the dollar-sized format into smaller tokens and larger presentation pieces. Collectors pursuing this category often specialize by exposition, by manufacturer, or by thematic focus, as the sheer volume of material rewards specialization over generalism.
