Description

This 1893 gilt bronze medal of Christopher Columbus, cataloged as Eglit-55, represents the premium version of one of the Columbian Exposition's most popular portrait medal designs. The gilt finish — a thin layer of gold applied over the bronze substrate — transforms the appearance from the warm brown of plain bronze to a rich golden luster, creating a more visually striking souvenir that commanded a higher retail price at the fair. The gilding on Eglit-55 medals of this era was typically applied through electroplating or, less commonly, through the older fire-gilding process using mercury amalgam. The quality and durability of the gilt layer varied considerably depending on the manufacturer and process used, and collectors today find specimens ranging from fully intact gilding to pieces where the gold has worn to reveal the underlying bronze across high points of the design. Columbus gilt bronze medals occupy a middle ground in the WCE collecting hierarchy — more prestigious than plain bronze or white metal examples, but far more accessible than the rare silver or gold specimens. The gilt finish lent an air of formality to what was fundamentally a commercial souvenir, and these pieces were purchased as gifts or display items rather than as casual pocket mementos. The Columbian Exposition's Commercial Club of Chicago helped coordinate the production and sale of higher-grade souvenirs like this one.

Rarity Notes

Moderately scarce in gilt bronze. The gilt version of Eglit-55 was produced in smaller quantities than the plain bronze, and examples with well-preserved gilding are particularly sought after. Cleaning and wear readily diminish the gilt surface.
