Description

A rim cud on the 1923-S Monroe Doctrine Centennial Commemorative Half Dollar, CU-50c(C)-1923S-01 combines a die break error with one of the classic early commemoratives. Struck at the San Francisco Mint, the Monroe Doctrine half dollar was designed by Chester Beach and commemorated the centennial of President Monroe's 1823 doctrine asserting American opposition to European colonization in the Western Hemisphere. This issue belongs to the Classic Silver Commemorative series (1892-1954), a group of half dollars, quarters, and dollars produced in limited quantities for specific anniversaries, expositions, and historical milestones. A rim cud represents the loss of part of the die's rim gutter: on the coin it appears as a raised interruption in the design rim that tracks the rim's course.
