Description

Fourth documented reverse cud on the 1866 Indian Head Cent, this full cud variety records a complete die rim failure where a broken section separated from the reverse die face, leaving a cavity that filled with metal during striking to produce a raised featureless mass at the coin's edge. The 1866 date places this coin in the immediate post-Civil War era, when the United States was beginning Reconstruction and the economy was transitioning from wartime production. Indian Head Cents of this period were struck in the bronze composition (95% copper, 5% tin and zinc) adopted in 1864 — a change from the earlier copper-nickel alloy that had proven harder on dies and less popular with the public due to its pale color. The bronze composition, while softer than copper-nickel, still generated significant die stress during the high-pressure striking necessary to fully bring up the detailed Indian Head obverse and the ornate oak wreath reverse designed by James Barton Longacre. Four reverse cuds documented for the 1866 indicates that multiple reverse dies developed rim fractures severe enough to produce full separations during the year's production run of approximately 9.8 million coins — a relatively low mintage that required fewer die pairs than later, higher-volume years. The "04R" designation identifies this as the fourth reverse cud, distinguished from the other three by the specific location and size of the cud mass on the rim. Indian Head Cent cuds from the 1860s represent some of the earliest systematically documented die failure evidence in the U.S. cent series, predating the Lincoln Cent's introduction by over four decades.
