Description
The 2026 (P) Freedom 250 Race Medal is a national medal struck at Philadelphia for the Freedom 250 Grand Prix, the first NTT IndyCar Series race in Washington, D.C., held August 22 and 23, 2026. The obverse shows an Indy car inscribed USA in front of the U.S. Capitol, with UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and FREEDOM 250. The reverse shows a portrait of Roger Penske, the former driver who owns IndyCar and the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, wearing a headset, with MOTORSPORT PIONEER and ROGER PENSKE. The Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee recommended this obverse and no reverse; the Commission of Fine Arts recommended this reverse, the design Penske's representatives preferred. It was sold only during a preorder window, August 21 to September 4, 2026, at $60 with a maximum of 15,000, and produced to the orders received; the Mint says no additional medals will be produced. Struck in copper-nickel clad (8.33% nickel, balance copper), 11.34 grams and 1.205 inches (30.61 mm) across, the size of a half dollar, with a plain edge, a matte finish and no mint mark.
