About This Coin
The Freedom 250 Race Medal is a United States Mint national medal for the Freedom 250 Grand Prix, the first NTT IndyCar Series race in Washington, D.C., run on a course around the National Mall on August 22 and 23, 2026, as part of the semiquincentennial. The obverse shows an Indy car inscribed USA in front of the U.S. Capitol, with UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and FREEDOM 250. The reverse shows a portrait of Roger Penske, the former driver who owns IndyCar and the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, wearing a headset, with MOTORSPORT PIONEER and ROGER PENSKE. The Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee recommended this obverse and no reverse; the Commission of Fine Arts recommended this reverse, the design Penske's representatives preferred.
