Description

This clad medal features Superman from the United States Mint's Comic Art Coin and Medal Collection, produced in the same half-dollar-sized format used for the program's base metal offerings. Superman (Kal-El / Clark Kent) first appeared in Action Comics #1 (June 1938), created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster. Superman, the Man of Steel, was the first comic book superhero and has defined the genre since his debut in 1938. Born on the planet Krypton as Kal-El and raised in Smallville, Kansas as Clark Kent, Superman possesses extraordinary powers including flight, super strength, heat vision, and invulnerability. Created by two young men from Cleveland, Ohio, Superman became an instant cultural phenomenon and has remained one of the most recognizable fictional characters in the world for nearly nine decades. The obverse depicts Superman in flight, symbolizing hope and strength, with the character rendered in a dynamic comic art style that captures the energy of classic DC Comics illustration. The reverse features the iconic Superman shield emblem. This clad medal matches the specifications of a United States half dollar in composition (8.33% nickel, balance copper), diameter (30.61 mm / 1.205 inches), and weight (11.340 grams). It features a plain edge and is not legal tender. The clad medal is sold exclusively as part of the Comic Art Three-Medal Set alongside the other 2025 characters (Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman). No individual sales or fixed mintage limits have been announced. The clad medal format makes the Comic Art program accessible to the widest possible audience, with base metal composition keeping the price point affordable for casual collectors, fans, and younger audiences. Superman inaugurated the Comic Art Coin and Medal Program as its first character release on July 24, 2025, establishing the artistic and production standards for the entire multi-year series. The United States Mint's Comic Art Coin and Medal Program represents the first major collaboration between the federal mint and a comic book publisher, bringing DC Comics' legendary characters to official U.S. numismatic products. Each character is offered across multiple formats from gold proof coins to affordable clad medals, serving collectors at every level. The half-dollar-sized clad medals provide a compact and affordable entry into the Comic Art collection, preserving the same designs as their precious metal counterparts in an accessible format.
